Every dog is different, and one of the things I love most about being a wedding dog chaperone is adapting my approach to suit each dog's personality.

When I first met Sulley before his parents' wedding at Saltaire Village Hall, it was clear that, as a rescue dog, he was naturally a little more cautious around new people. We agreed that the best approach would be to build a relationship beforehand.

Building Trust Before the Wedding

Over the weeks leading up to the wedding, Sulley and I met several times for walks together to build our relationship and his trust in me.

Armed with plenty of chicken (which quickly became Sulley's favourite reason to spend time with me!), we took everything at his pace.  The Groom joined us for these walks to put Sulley at ease.  With each visit, his confidence grew, and by the wedding day he was much happier to head off on adventures with me while his parents enjoyed their celebrations.

This extra preparation made a huge difference and meant everyone could relax, knowing Sulley was in safe hands.

A Calm and Happy Wedding Day

He spent time greeting guests as they arrived, soaking up plenty of fuss and attention before finding a quieter spot to watch one of the biggest moments of the day, his mum arriving at the venue.

We watched the confetti celebrations from a comfortable distance. This allowed Sulley to enjoy the excitement without feeling overwhelmed, keeping the experience positive and stress-free.

Once everyone had settled, Sulley joined his parents and Victoria the photographer for some beautiful wedding photographs around Saltaire Village Hall before taking a short trip to the nearby Fanny's Ale House, where the couple captured some relaxed and unique photos together with Sulley.

Ending the Day

Once Sulley's attendance was complete, I took him to his overnight kennels, where he could unwind after a busy day filled with new experiences, treats and lots of attention.

His parents were then free to enjoy the rest of their wedding celebrations, knowing Sulley had been looked and safety delivered to the kennels.

Every Dog Deserves Their Own Plan

Sulley's day is a great example of why there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to wedding dog chaperoning.

For some dogs, one meeting before the wedding is plenty. For others who are a little more nervous, taking the time to build trust beforehand can make all the difference.

Watching Sulley become more relaxed with me over our walks meant that, by the wedding day, he was comfortable enough for us to enjoy the day together. Taking the time to build that relationship beforehand made a real difference for both Sulley and his parents.
